JUBAIL CAUSEWAY BRIDGES

SOMAC’s work on this most prominent project consisted of the procurement and construction of three large bridges (two over 425m in length and one over 140m), some as prestressed box girders and some as precast post tensioned beams. Deep piles for abutments and huge retaining walls 12m in height with associated buttresses were built. Said bridges had to pass over high pressure hydrogen sulfide gas pipelines and overpassed two seawater canals 60m wide, a case which posed a big challenge in construction. Super elevated box girders 2.4m high and 17m wide with free spans up to 60m in length were built. The bridges received three sequences of post tensioning. Over 150 precast post-tensioned beams up to 38m in length and 90 tons in weight each had to be installed under very adverse conditions, location- and schedule-wise. SOMAC prestressing engineers and teams carried over six hundred prestressing operations implementing the design criteria with high accuracy and superlative professionalism. SOMAC dealt with the three world authorities on bridges: T.Y.Lin, VSL Losinger, and James Libby (California, USA) and delivered the challenging project ahead of schedule.

INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL COMPLEX

SOMAC’s work consisted of the procurement and construction of about 1,200 commercial units with all associated works from A to Z. This included, among others, electrical substations, 350kms of high and medium voltage cable installations, telecommunications, drainage networks, fire fighting networks, kiosks, batteries of rest rooms and transformers (power capacity 14 MW), parking areas and streets, gigantic decorative arches of precast concrete. Given the challenge of the project in its magnitude and tight schedule, SOMAC established a precast factory, a steel shop factory and a carpentry shop. This allowed SOMAC to complete the project ahead of expected timelines and with the highest level of quality.

GULF MARKET (AL-HAYAT PLAZA)

One of the biggest projects of its kind in the Kingdom at the time, this project occupies an area of 150,000 square meters of commercial space, including 1,560 commercial units and a great mosque.

SOMAC’s work consisted of the procurement and construction of a Gulf Market occupying an area of 150,000 square meters, including 1,560 commercial units, 6 main kiosks, a great mosque, 17 power rooms with a total capacity of 18 million watts, 12 telecommunication rooms, 1,500 car parks, thousands of precast decorative arches of 10 meters in width, a fire fighting system, a drainage system, 36,000 square meters of covered and air-conditioned streets, side walks, water fountains and play grounds etc.

Thanks to SOMAC’s expertise and efficient working practices, we were able to deliver this project in 17 months, five months ahead of schedule.

RASTANURA REFINERY UPGRADE

Major upgrade under conditions of a live refinery to one of the oldest refineries in the region.

This prominent project was distinguished in that it had to be completed under conditions of a live refinery, which required absolute levels of safety, quality control and progress under very ominous and adverse conditions. Sub-soil strata were full of live pipes, cables, utilities etc. and likewise above ground.

SOMAC’s work on this prominent project consisted of the procurement and construction of civil and building works including, among others, the construction of Process Interface Buildings, electrical substations, pumps, manholes, valve boxes, neutralization tanks, high lift pump house, travelling screen, cofferdam, equipment and pipe rack foundations, pile caps, pipe sleepers, structural steel, site paving and bridges with supply of related steel, electrical, instrumentation and sanitary systems.

KHANNAK & MALLOULI BRIDGES

SOMAC’s work consisted of the procurement and construction of two bridges, the Khannak bridge (290m length) and the Mallouli bridge (400m length), in Tripoli, Lebanon. Works covered all related construction works including foundations, piers, abutments and retaining walls, etc.

AIMAN IRRIGATION SYSTEM

SOMAC’s work consisted of the procurement and installation of a general irrigation system in the Aiman area in Egypt, including large distance pressure pipes (over 13km of pressure pipes 1,200MM – 300MM), pump stations, pumps (1,900 cubic meters / hour) and all associated civil works.
