Project Description

Riyadh Metro is a landmark transportation project consisting of 176km of main lines that will revolutionize transport in KSA’s capital.

SOMAC’s activities consisted of procurement and construction works across several Lines including earth works, viaducts construction, tunnels, concrete and structural works (retaining walls, cut & cover tunnels, slabs & decks, water barriers, etc.), finishing works (installation of edge units, painting, etc.) and landscaping. Specific works included, among others, the following:

Procurement and construction of 447 viaduct piers in Line 4.1 and 4.2, 123 viaduct piers in Line 6.3, and civil works and deck slab for Line 6.1.2. This included excavation, backfilling, disposal of materials, pile head treatments, footings, pier and pier head constructions, waterproofing works, and post tensioning works (concrete and rebar supplied by main contractor)
Procurement and construction of cut and cover tunnel including footings, walls, roof slabs, formwork and falsework (design, fabrication, installation and dismantling), expansion joints, waterproofing works, joints and sealing works, and barriers (concrete and rebar supplied by main contractor).
Procurement and construction of civil works for the elevated stations, including excavation, backfilling & disposal, installation of rebar, installation of formwork, concreting, supply installation of waterproofing, steel grating, anchor fixing and grouting (concrete and rebar supplied by Main Contractor).
Procurement and construction of structural works for emergency exits in Line 4 and Line 6 including excavation, backfilling and disposal, installation of rebar, installation of formwork, concreting, supply and installation of waterproofing (concrete and rebar supplied by main contractor).
Procurement and construction of two retaining walls and one cantilever pier including footings, pier / wall, pier head and post tensioning work (major permanent materials supplied by client)
Various concrete and structural works (assembly area at emergency exit in Line 4, viaduct pier 9, 10, 11 and concrete slab and steel deck from A17 to pier 14 in Line 4, A4 retaining wall at Line 4 / Line 6 depot entrance, viaduct at grade and ramp A1 and A2…)
Installation of decorative “edge unit” claddings on both sides of existing concrete rail bridges totaling a length of 16km (32km with claddings on both sides). Works included surveying, drilling, fixing of anchors with epoxy, installation of main steel frames, installation of nose steel frames, installation of walkways, and installation of aluminum Cladding (frames and claddings supplied by main contractor)
Painting to concrete surfaces of 16km of rail bridge viaducts structures including piers and girders
Landscaping works for ITPS 6.1 in Line 6
